Subtitles font problem

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open a Video file
2. Add a subtitle file with a non Latin-based language (i.e. Hebrew, Arabic
etc.)
3. As no unicode support is on, all you can see it Gibberish.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expecting to see normal subtitles, all I get is weird letters instead

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
0.75V on Wii 4.1U

Do you have a modchip?
I think so :P I'm not sure

Please provide any additional information below.

try to select your subs codepage

Example:
subcp=ISO-8859-1  
for latin

you have to change codepage according your language

I were able to get Hebrew readable by taking the Hebrew version from the site, 
and
replacing the subfont.ttf with Arial.ttf taken from msttcorefonts package. 

Before replacing the font file, Hebrew characters in menus appeared as 
underscore
character.

After replacing I got the subtitles to appear as expected (but the font size 
was very
small on my TV), and the application menus to appear correctly.

I have problem with hungarian characters. Font in 0.75 can use hungarian but 
there is
some problem with encoding(á, ö, ü ...). I tried: 
subfont-encoding="ISO8859-2"
,subfont-encoding="ISO8859-9" subfont-encoding="UTF-8" (with or without line:
utf8=yes) or original unicode. 

subfont-osd-scale=3
subfont-text-scale=3
subfont-encoding="ISO 8859-2"
utf8=yes
subcp=cp852

What need I do?

Thanks vlast3k, this also works with Arabic Subtitles on Wii in a similar 
fashion.

1.Copy the Arial font from your Windows font folder (drag & drop) to mplayer_ce
directory on your SD, or acquire from somewhere else, taking copyright into
consideration.

2.Rename subfont.ttf to subfont.ttf.dist (as a backup)

3.Rename arial.ttf to subfont.ttf

4.Edit your mplayer.conf (w/ notepad) by adding to the end of the file:

#Arabic Subtitles Setting
slang=ar
subcp=windows-1256

5.That should do it.

Notes:
I got the font from Windows Vista SP2 (I'm assuming msttcorefonts are all the 
same
but just in case)
0.75V on Wii 4.0U
Check msttcorefonts packages or Liberation fonts if ur on Linux.
The font wii be tiny, edit

                subfont-text-scale=

in mplayer.conf to your liking.

It works fine for me too!

I changed the parameters for Brazilian-Portuguese (Latin). For those who wants 
this, 
the setting that I used is:

#Subtitles Setting
slang=pt,en
subcp=ISO-8859-1

To display polish characters in subtitles use this settings:
slang=pl
subcp=Windows-1250.

Worked for me anyway.

To display Hebrew subtitles use mika7k7 comment (number 21).
But change mplayer.conf with these:

#Hebrew Subtitles Setting
slang=iw
subcp=ISO-8859-8

I also made the subtitles larger with these:
subfont-text-scale=4

I use Mplayer CE 0.76 and I want to add the ability to see arabic names of 
folders in
my SMB shares on my PC. They appear in strange characters(á, ö, ü ...). How 
can solve
that? I managed before to fix arabic subtitles by adding the following to the 
end of
mplayer.conf:

#Arabic Subtitles Setting 
slang=ar 
subcp=windows-1256

This fixed arabic subtitles but not arabic folder names in SMB shares on my PC.

I arleady tried everything that you guys said to put accents working on mplayer 
and nothing :S

I followed  "mika7k7" tutorial:

ok i found it i downloaded the fonts font-arial-iso-8859-7 added them in the 
fonts folder and then replaced the subfont with the arial one ;) then edited 
the mplayer #Greek Subtitles Setting 
slang=gr 
subcp=ISO-8859-7
 IT WORKED FOR ME ;)
