🔥[🐛] Not all subscribed iOS devices to topic receive data notification, most often none at all. [Solution: send less than 4KB of payload] #5332

Issue

We have webhooks on the web app that are triggered on certain events. Those webhooks then send a request to the respective Firebase Cloud Function. With information from the request's header they get the topic they must send the notification to; from the request's body it gathers the information to be sent as data to the device. They are sent as data notifications only, the handler (setBackgroundMessageHandler from React Native FCM API) then shows a local notification already translated with i18n using the react-native-push-notifications package. Everything works fine until I hit the weird situation described below.

Everything was doing alright both on Android and iOS until I launched the app on Test Flight for internal testing and then it stopped working after some time on iOS. Eventually, I noticed that when more than one iPhone subscribed to the same topic it eventually lead to inconsistencies in the delivery of the data notifications. The first iPhone to subscribe to the topic usually worked, the others didn't, the first one most of the time eventually stopped working as well or sometimes it just kept working while the others still didn't. I used the Firebase Console to send some test notification to the subscribed devices and it they actually received it. I then changed my Cloud Functions' code to avoid sending any data and just send some example body and title and it turns out the problem was here. As soon as I send something through the data field in the admin.messaging.Message object to be sent as argument to the admin.messaging().send method, they aren't received by the iPhone devices subscribed to the topic (or it's received by one or two max, the first ones to currently subscribe to the topic. But they usually stop receiving them after a while as well).

This is really really weird and being so inconsistent makes it practically impossible to debug with my current knowledge. Some things to keep in mind:

What can be the cause of the problem? Could the error be from react-native-firebase's part? I doubt it, but I'm here specially hoping that someone has already been trough the same experience as me. The rest of the possible responsibility lies on by behalf (which I find improbably, since it works fine on Android and on iOS on the specific scenarios already described), on Firebase not actually managing the topics and sending the notifications properly, or it's on APNs' side. But I highly doubt this last one.

Really would appreciate some help. Also, I'm sorry if this is not the exact place to put this question but I'm highly desperate and I wanted to expose the problem to as much people as I can in order to get a fix or even some possible guidance on how to approach this. My current knowledge doesn't really make it possible to debug this any further. This said, feel free to block this if you really feel it isn't appropriate to post it in here, no problem.

Thanks in advance.

Turns out the data payload was exceeding the 4KB APNs limit but since when you send by topic it doesn't show any errors at all I had no way of knowing. So yeah, add this to your checklist

mikehardy commented 3 years ago

Oh my - that's subtle. Thanks for reporting back

afonsoafonsoafonso commented 3 years ago

Oh my - that's subtle. Thanks for reporting back

Yep! Even more subtle in my case since I actually had tested this. Turns out my data payload usually varies around 2KB and 4.5KB based on user data but when I was testing, since it was simplified dummy data, it usually went towards the lower limit and the individual notifications sent by device token always worked so I had discarded this possibility. Turns out when deploying and testing on more realistic data it went over the limit and I didn't have a way of knowing.

Small tip for those implementing topic messaging: test, test and test again sending to a individual device. Then, test a bit more. Once you're done, finally implement the topic logic since it's quite easy and straightforward. If you're sure the rest works, the topics will probably work as well in no time.

Thank you anyways @mikehardy. Good work!
