Sacfor vocabulary #4

Hi Gwen,

I've encountered some datasets which use the Sacfor abundance scale http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/page-2684. Would it be possible to include this scale as a new BODC vocabulary so we would be able to link to it using the measurementValueID field?

I would also need a P01 term for the SACFOR abundance scale. Proposed definitions and labels (based on http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/P01/current/HELCCVRG/) Label: Abundance category (SACFOR) of biological entity specified elsewhere Definition: Encoded scale defined by JNCC (http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/page-2684) used to describe the abundance or the proportion of the sampled area of the seabed covered by a plant or animal identified elsewhere in the metadata.

Thnx!

Hi Daphnis, No problem about the new P01 term but I am not sure how the scale would look like as a vocabulary even though I have the table in front of me. Could you send an example about what you have in mind? Thanks Gwen.

I'm not clear on how it would look like as a vocabulary either. The P01 term would already help a lot.

I have found more information about the SACFOR scale (http://erccis.org.uk/sites/default/files/docs/ORKS%20ShoresearchAbundance%20SACFOR%20scale.pdf) and that gave me a better idea how the SACFOR scale could be displayed in a controlled vocabulary. I will contact JNCC to see how we could take this forward. Regarding the P01 parameter code for it, have you considered using the existing http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/P01/current/SDBIOL06/?

Daphnisd commented 6 years ago

Great about the SACFOR vocabulary, thnx!

About the SDBIOL06. I think that it's relevant to have different P01 parameter for different classification systems. The SDBIOL06 is used when a classification is made, but not according to a described system. It would have terms like "rare", "abundant" which are really only comparable within the dataset. In case of the sacfor parameter. The measurementValues would be S,A,C,... which only make sence if you know that the parameter is SACFOR abundance.

gwemon commented 6 years ago

No problem. I have created a new S06 property for "Abundance category (SACFOR)" and a code for the P01 parameter. It will be published on the NVS during our overnight publication round. The new P01 code is SACFOR01.
