Reproduction status vocabulary #8

A user asked us to create a new P01 code for terms that qualify the reproduction status of an organism (e.g. Reproduction status of biological entity specified elsewhere). The user quoted terms such as: gravid, mature gonads, dark moult stage, white moult stage, post-spawning stage... Is anybody aware of a standard vocabulary for these descriptors? Is "Reproduction status" the correct term for this?

This would complement the existing http://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/P01/current/LSTAGE01/

http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/terms/#dwc:reproductiveCondition is one DwC term that could hold terms such as immature, gravid, spent. The DwC examples are: non-reproductive, pregnant, in bloom, fruit-bearing

Does another level need to be included as well? Indicate if species produces eggs or not?? Example http://www.marinespecies.org/traits/wiki/Traits:Oviparous Perhaps gravid is equivalent to mature gonads? Perhaps spent is similar to post-spawning?

Is there a recommended ontology? Species>LifeStage>Gender>ReproductionType:ReproductiveCondition

I am not sure about white and dark moult stage → perhaps these belong in lifeHistory? I don’t see moult listed here: http://www.marinespecies.org/traits/wiki/Traits:Lifehistory

I think WoRMS is the place to describe is a taxon is capable of carrying eggs or not and OBIS would be the place to document such observations. So I think a term ReproductiveCondition would be suitable for at least some of the terms listed. (Dark moult stage may indeed be something else, but that doesn't need to stop us from creating something for Reproductive condition).

So that would become "Reproduction status of biological entity specified elsewhere"?

Is it possible to reference the TDWG term somewhere the concept (perhaps the URI with same as)?

gwemon commented 5 years ago

@Daphnisd Could you provide the URI for the TDWG list? Thanks. Gwen.

I think these are all we created based on TDWG

Has a term been created based on DwC.behavior? Example would be for seabirds where it is important to note if birds are sitting on the water, flying, feeding, etc. If one is conducting a count based on visual observation it will make a difference.

Also have any terms been created for ‘organism’ http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/terms/#organism These are important for tagged specimens and for tracking datasets. In these cases the organism is an individual. For whales one might wish to use ‘pods’. Etc
