branding, colors, type, etc. for the MVP #167

maybe we should add a splash of color!

maybe something from the FF palette to pay homage to our mozillian roots? -- https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/styleguide/identity/firefox/color/ or something else entirely if we're not feeling that.

(i am not attached to this in general, nor to any particular color; we can stick with black if we want.)

hamilton commented 6 years ago

I don't personally mind the black at the moment, but I agree it is worth exploring some other options. Ultimately this is a branding question that is worth exploring when we are at that point.

Iodine is described as "purplely black" a number of places (the color of compounds with iodide ion depends on the rest of the compound). But dark purple could be cool... purple is one of the FF colors, so we could still stay in that brand palette https://design.firefox.com/photon/visuals/color.html

Love this idea.

We could try dark purple (#301934), palatinate (#682860), or byzantium (#702963).

hamilton commented 6 years ago

I've tried these out. Too obviously purple does feel a bit yahoo-ish. Dark purple is the most clearly NOT-yahoo. I would argue we could take that and make it even darker, and we'd still feel the color change without such a big uninentional brand nod.

another idea for the header bar etc if that is too yahooish-- we could do something really beautiful playing with the idea of the emmission lines of iodine-- http://chemistry.bd.psu.edu/jircitano/I.gif http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/quantum/atspect3.html#c2

but maybe stylized like these: https://wallpaperscraft.com/download/background_color_spectrum_lines_38913/2048x1152 https://goo.gl/images/he2WE6 http://imgfave.com/view/1744

i really love the use of multicolor gradients in the new FF logos/quantum branding, and I think we might be able to capture something like that with a concept in this realm (and while still nodding to our sciency content ;-) ). it would be a stretch for my skill set to make assets like that myself, but i could imagine martell or someone coming up a really distinctive, visually striking, and beautiful look.

anyway developing those assets and experimenting with more complicated looks is not something we need to worry about now -- picking a purple sounds great. For a flat box of color I agree the the darker purples seem best.

We should chat with Sean Martell.

But otherwise agree - let’s go with a darker purple for now.
