Use something like NewRelic Synthetics or Pingdom to ensure that notifications are send if the site goes down.

I set up an alert with NewRelic.

They have an option to add a Response validation string. It in not necessary, but is it worth it? @glogiotatidis

NR Synthetics is just fine (I even have a CLI management tool for that, NeReS).

+1 for the validation string if you use something very generic, like kickit. Adding SSL validation won't hurt either.
