Registration of portals and products sounds potentially useful; one thought is that mixing products and data in the discovery tool might be confusing, so the interface should make it clear that there are apples and oranges catalogued and also provide a way to look only at apples or oranges.
We should consider a) is it possible to differentiate between the two (some metadata key data providers could add in their harvested metadata) and b) if so, how can/should we present the two different data categories within CKAN - perhaps a separate inventory other than 'datasets' within the UI?.
It may not be easy to do this, but this request should be tracked as an issue/enhancement for followup.
This issue won't be fixed in the IOOS Catalog. IOOS Catalog is mostly focused on datasets and there hasn't been significant demand for registering RA portals or products in the catalog.
