What is being requested?

Develop an inventory of what types of biological data are being collected, by whom, and where it is being stored.

What is the timeline for the completion of this task?

Summer 2024?

Provide a description or any other important information.

This should include information about specific measurements, their latency, precision, sensitivity, methods, post-processing. This can be used to standardize biological measurements and to enable comparisons across spatial & temporal scales. We should try to draw parallels to EOVs and incorporate the GOOS framework as much as possible.

This should include defining a controlled vocabulary for observing methods. We've discussed this at the MBON all hands meeting and folks from GBIF are interested in using that as a way to filter for data.

If we go about doing this via GCMD, here is the governance document that details how to add new terms to GCMD. NASA also has some information about this on their wiki. I'm not really sure if this would be a fast-track or full review scenario.

Alternatively, if GBIF/TDWG are interested in expanding standards like this for filtering, would they use the GCMD keywords? Is there an existing standard somewhere else that could be used? Or is there a need to put these into DwC? From what I understand about the new GBIF data model, maybe they could use GCMD? That part seems like a bigger conversation.

But we also need to decide what level/how detailed are we categorizing different observing methods? And build out the controlled vocabulary that might be envisioned based on that.

Updating to add: I think this information could possibly go in dwc:eventType, but having a community-developed controlled vocab there might be the best way to enable standardized filtering. Once we have our list of desired observing method types, we could add them to GCMD and also put those in eventType.
