What is being requested?

Investigate a model to support the development and maintenance of the ATN DAC, which includes steps for:

[ ] Developing a draft document of existing services and costs for the ATN DAC: highlight services that the DAC provides and what the costs are to keep it running; Estimate costs over a year; Assess life cycle costs of different types of tags (PTT ID assignment > ingestion > entire work load for DAC > DOI minted
[ ] Drafting services and costs for the ATN DAC: highlight services the ATN DAC could provide and estimate costs for expansion. Estimate costs over a year; Examine historical project loads (e.g. start with examining base funding, projects, and tag load from last year) for future forecasting
[ ] Investigate the feasibility of different funding models

What is the requested deadline and why?

August 2025

What is the current status quo (i.e., what happens if this does not get done)?

Multiple agencies have funded animal telemetry activities to address questions that are central to their mission or program needs, some of which require funded PIs to submit data to the ATN and DAC, whereas others encourage the use of the ATN and DAC. All agencies and programs involved with the ATN with tag-related research awards are willing to include funds to cover the ATN DAC data management costs in grants and contracts. Some agencies are not able to support direct funding via a services contract or other contracts, whereas some agencies may be able to allocate funds for ATN DAC data management services. ATN needs more support on many fronts and would benefit from more funding from multiple sources.

Clear development plan for a funding model to support the development of the ATN DAC and/or documentation for what steps were taken and/or barriers exist
