@kwilcox, I'm guessing this PR from @duncombe-noaa has not been acted on because it does too much. Is that right?

All of the merge commits are just keeping my fork in sync with the ioos master. The only commits that are relevant are fbe38f4 , b617e7b, and 808d324. I don't think there's a lot of changes in there. I'd appreciate some guidance on how to submit only the relevant commits in a pull request. I trashed a few locally cloned repositories trying various things with rebase to get it to ignore the merges and gave up, allowing github to produce the pull request however it wanted to.

I think I have figured out how to submit my changes without all the ugliness. I am cancelling this pull request and creating a new one. @rsignell-usgs @kwilcox
