NPK testing #1

HI, I see you have developed Active Carbon, Turbidity, Nitrite,Nitrate and Ammonia testing usinng colormeter.

Have you tried or your color sensor able to measure NPK nutrient using reagent?

Another question is you also use AS7431, regarding NPK is AS7431 is more accurate and easier to use?

In my opinion the TSL2591 is better for the measurement of absorbance (extinction). The spectral responsivity of this sensor is from 415nm to 1100nm. When you are going for a common molybdenium blue silicate/phosphatetest, you need sensitivity for 810nm or 880nm. You do NOT need to go for a spectrum, because you choose the LED at 850nm to measure the absorbance. The linear relationship according to the Lambert-Beer-Law is realized and you can quantify the concentration of different Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium-sources (Ammonium at 660nm with Berthelot reaction, Nitrate at 570nm with Azodye, Phosphate with Molybdenium Blue and Potassium with Phenolate -Turbidity at 700nm (white light source is also possible, when you are using a filter). When you want to take an absorbance spectrum in the visible range, than you could take the AS7341 11channel sensor or a Hamamatsu mini-spectrometer.

Thanks for your input. Due to my software engineer background, these chemistry things you mentioned are overwhelming. So far, I can only get Turbidity working using 850nm

I have been doing research on this for the last 2 weeks. Slow as chemistry is not my specialty. I am looking to build an NPK spectrometer device for farmers by trying to make it as automated as possible and avoid complexity and steps in chemical preparation.

Based on your suggestion, TSL2591 alone can measure NPK but just need to use different LED(570nm, 660nm, 700nm). Am I right?

in your substrate. According to the Reaktion you choose the LED. Also you need a calibration with Standards.

Dear GarudaOne,

there is no possibility to do that without chemicals, because phosphate, nitrate, ammonia and potassium themselves do not absorb light in the visible range. The chemistry behind is 100 years old and ONLY for nitrate there is an alternative in the UV-absorbtion at two wavelengthes (APHA). This is only appropriate for clear drinking water and you need the UV-version of the iorodeo-photometer as well.
