Will iotschema.org be folded into schema.org? #87

Open benfrancis opened 1 year ago

I note that the schema.org website says that as of April 2019, the content of hosted extensions to schema.org like bib.schema.org and auto.schema.org will be folded into schema.org, following a change in the extension mechanism.

Are there any plans to do the same for iotschema.org/iot.schema.org?

We need to figure that out.

It is possible we can retain subdomain homepages for community / topical entry points even if the schema terms themselves are no longer categorized the same way.

What is the current status of the draft iot schemas?

I'd like to understand that too. There haven't been any commits in quite a while and the website is often down (#83), so I guess people have been busy with other things which is fine.

I'm interested in adding support for the iotschema.org schemas in the WebThings platform, and potentially eventually consolidating our own schemas with the iotschema.org ones.

I'm also working on the W3C WoT Profile specification where we're on the look out for stable ontologies to recommend for various things for interoperability purposes.

@danbri @danicic colleagues can someone please help for http://iotschema.org/docs/full.html It is again down and this brings not a good feeling. I think you also noticed this @benfrancis

Is someone looking into that? Why is the page going constantly down? If that is a dead end, I think it shall be better to let interested parties know about that.

Thanks for clarification.

The page is still down again.

I really think this project is dead. We must think of other options because of this.

Maintainers could at least leave a note that the project is not maintained anymore.

From a Schema.org perspective I would say this effort is best couched as exploratory investigations. At this point it isn’t clear what, if anything, it would make sense to propose to Schema.org.

So if this is exploratory investigations, there shall be not a publicly available website. That page is constantly down. Just put the infos here into github, and people can take it from here.

I currently can not see any other overview with iot.schema.org IoT devices and their capabilities. Only the website which is not maintained at all.

For Schma.org it would been a big chance to adapt the webthings models and merge these efforts.

danbri commented 1 year ago

We could potentially adopt something at Schema.org if there was serious evidence it was moving out of labs/research mode.

The site being down is likely a consequence of it being a volunteer effort from human contributors who have other calls on their time. Complaining that a site is down isn’t going to help anything, and seems an unfortunate response to their sincere and unfunded efforts here.

Hello @danbri I am offering support to take that over. Complaining will not help, I agree. We offer all support and contribution we can give, if required. We are OSS people and love what you all have created here. But we shall not let it end here as a good exploration. Lets do more out of it.

We are working with Volkswagen and many other big companies where we are using schema.org and iot.schema for our models for services or devices. If required I can share a video or some infos about that. We are in Production with a Product and 100K+ users be using this. In between schema.org is powering it, so I think thats not research anymore.
