Stop developing this technology #41

Open alonsoir opened 2 years ago

alonsoir commented 2 years ago

This technology is only going to be used for evil purposes. To deceive people, steal their money, possessions, undercover operations. Nothing good. It is already being used for scams like the pig-butchering plate, in which hundreds of thousands of lives around the world are being left without money, causing a lot of suffering.

nofacedeepfake commented 2 years ago

Well, ban cars, weapons, hunting, the Internet, computers. you wrote such nonsense. technology will develop, but without you. on the contrary, it must be developed. it was created for entertainment, and if a person uses it for other purposes, then let him answer for himself, it’s not the technology that’s to blame, but the person, not the machine gun, but the person. learn to recognize technology is my advice to you.

alonsoir commented 2 years ago

Honestly, i understand you perfectly. I am a software engineer like you people. The problem is creating technology that can be turned into a weapons system in peacetime. This technology is being used by scammers, almost exclusively, then, what more use can there be than pretending to be someone you are not? a joke? What if it is not? What if it serves for someone to impersonate someone important in your family and communicate to the rest that you have died? Or if it serves to authenticate a scammer's access to a mobile? or a foreign agent from a country hostile to the interests of your country?

You say that the responsibility is yours because you should be able to recognize that it is a deepfake, and before that I tell you that currently if you have a trained eye and you are alert, it is quickly recognized, as in the example you have given of the Putin video. It is seen to the millisecond that it is not him, but that is because the technology is still at a green point. The uncanny valley will disappear in no time.

I speak to you as a victim of a scam of this type of technology. Please, you have family, put yourselves in the shoes of your relatives who know nothing at all about technology. Think of ways to recognize the bad uses of this technology that is not going to bring anything good. It is already destroying the lives of multiple people, every day. I beg you, put your knowledge at the service of good, not evil.

Best,

Alonso

I think the whole problem is electricity! It needs to be turned off! This technology could be used to destroy our planet. Think about it.

alonsoir commented 2 years ago

Sir, I wish you learn the hard way then the misuse of technology. If you are not capable of reflecting in the slightest, you are a cynic who will have to learn the hard way.

In the meantime, know that you have my absolute contempt and you must know precisely what your technology is for. To destroy life and plunge 80-year-old grandfathers and grandmothers into poverty. In your conscience, if you have it, it will remain.

This time it was my parents, tomorrow who knows, it will be theirs, or those of someone they know.

But what the hell, they should have recognized that they are fake faces, right?

Damn it, man. Blaming technology because of a case of scamming? Seriously?

How many people have been scammed by governments, banks, stocks, insurance companies, and so on? How many have been victimized by phone scammers, TV scammers, Internet scammers? Millions? A billion? How many lives have been broken? How many have lost jobs, families and even lives? Was it technology or human nature to blame?

You're talking about global things, citing an isolated case as an example. A drop in the sea. Do you know what % of those who use this technology will use it harmfully? What is the acceptable margin of error? I guess you don't have an answer. You're just looking for guilty.

These are realities of progress And reality is always worse than we think. So it was, and it will be.

Peace.

I am agree with the opositors to this post, technology is not good or evil, it is neutral, people who use technology can use it for good or for evil... if someone blame this technology, why not to blame guns, warships, tanks, airplanes, shotguns, machineguns before blaming this technology? I think a gun is more dangerous than this technology, and if someone use a gun, a tank or this technology to comite crimes then he or she should be judged in a court and put in jail, not the creator of this technology... and I am not agree this technology will be used only for evil, It can be used also in art projects, in the cinema, in the industry of entretainment... I have artistic projects and I personaly use it for it... this technology toguether with other technologies can be used to create characters like Alita (in the movie) and do art with it...

Technology is not guilty or inocent, people is guilty or inocent

Because it might provide benefit? And some obviously don't? You have to consider there being nuance in everything, including technological development, unless you're going to be willing to do anything for the sake of progress.

Make that argument for the nuclear bomb. I am waiting for the good side of those.

naddika commented 2 years ago

Very easy - if not the nuclear bombs, some countries that have them, would've long been invaded by some other countries. As a result, many people would be killed and suffer.

The topic reminds me about covid-idiots who suddenly have started to assume that there's only ONE and only ONE dangerous virus in this planet -- covid-19, aka little flu! The only one which must be dealt with. And who neglects THOUSANDS of other viruses that've always existed and will exist, live among us, and which too have killed and will kill people. Let alone thousands non-viral induced causes of death.

Therefore, forget about thousands of other threats and let's fight one threat which has suddenly become more important that others.

lemontree-hub commented 2 years ago

Opponents against this technology, please first read the paper containing the authors' (DeepFaceLab) thoughts. https://arxiv.org/pdf/2005.05535.pdf

The authors say: "The best defense is a good offense."

There have always been crimes such as the misuse of the technologies even before this technology was made public. I totally agree with the thought that it’s not the technology that’s to blame, but the person.

As a researcher and developer, I would like to thank the developers and the researchers who have contributed and made this technology public. This technology could be used for more useful purposes, such as defending against counterfeiting or adversarial attack, and more.

As the authors have mentioned in the paper, research on media anti-forgery detection is being invigorated and dedicating growing efforts to forgery face detection. Training robust forgery detection models requires high-quality fake data. I also want to contribute to this technology so that it can help people who really need it.

HWiese1980 commented 2 years ago

@iperov Expressing an opinion is one thing. Spreading fake "facts" and conspiracy theories is a completely different story. An opinion is not a problem until it turns into deep superstition and anti-democratic, radicalized movements. We have too many of those already to give them a platform where they can distribute their hazardous bullshit.

iperov commented 2 years ago

So you're in favor of censorship on the Internet?

HWiese1980 commented 2 years ago

@iperov Censorship would be if they couldn't spread their junk at all anymore. They can! No one stops them from going outside and uttering their dirt everywhere. No one's gonna put them in jail for it.

Would you keep their posts up if they said, Jews were the root of all evil and needed to be gassed because they were in bed with the lizard people and formed a shadow cabinet that ruled the world? It's the exact same fake bullshit, and it's extremely dangerous.

By giving them a platform here (on GitHub where it should be all about code, not about conspiracy theories anyway) you contribute to the spreading of such wrong and dangerous bullshit. Do you want to be associated with it? Because that's what you'll get from it, nothing else.

CycloneRing commented 2 years ago

@alonsoir I'm not sure what kind of idiot you are but if you were doing more research on this "technology" you could find out why it can be used with "celebrities" for now

First of all there are AI tools to detect a deepfake, Beside that imagine if I want to do something evil with someone esle, do you know how many "good" footage I need from that person to create a deep fake model to produce a good unrecognizable deepfake? Yeah... Think before say shit.

HWiese1980 commented 2 years ago

Exactly. We've had Photoshop fake since the beginning of all (Photoshop-)time. What's different now is that the tools have changed. Nothing else. You can't blame the fact that people are killing and murdering each other on the mere existence of objects that could be (mis-)used as weapons. Do you want to ban axes? Hammers? Clubs? Kitchen knives? Cars? It does not help. It does not change human nature. It's in our nature to do these things. It's in our nature to try to get our deepest fantasies into our real world. It doesn't matter if we have the tools. If we don't have them, someone will build them. It's called progress. The greatest inventions have been made in times of big suffering. This is no different.

Of course it will be used to fake celebs fucking. Of course it will be used to create fake kompromat against politicians. It's on us to learn to detect, understand and filter these fakes, to learn to distinguish them from what's real, to learn to deal with the bad side of tools and objects that inherently are neither good nor bad. It's a process of learning. You can't save a child from getting its nose bloody. We're still children who currently take a good beating by our own creation, the world we're living in. We either grow from it or we go extinct.

This tool here is just a part of this process. Trying to get rid of it is like trying to fish pee out of a swimming pool.

You did not invented evil like other inventors who invented weapons of mass destruction , atomic bombs , viruses and so long ... ( for those real devil inventors , no one was telling them to stop , so why you will need ???? ) ......... Keep up the good job , and don't pay attention to haters ! And for those who believe that they may be able to stop something ......... I will tell them , to stop hating others ! Let's see if they can stop that first !

Make that argument for the nuclear bomb. I am waiting for the good side of those.

A nuclear bomb was used by the Soviet union to put out a massive gas well fire. It has been burning for three years, and all attempts to extinguished it failed. A nuke was then used to displace the land, and finally put it out.

Is this discussion still not obsolete? The horse is dead! The pee is in the pool! You can't un-have an idea. You can't un-develop a technology.

GeroBH commented 1 year ago

Hope this development keeps going until I have my new hardware and have learned how to run it on Linux. Not keen on installing the 'evil' win$, but this is the only software that could make me do a dual boot. Went over the 41 posts and seen both sides of the coin. Loved the part when it was closed and opened ;-) . Made my conclusion that i want to use it. The 'evil' has unlimited resources and will develop and use it. Closing this repository will not change anything. So i will use it to spread the info that this can now be done by the 'home-user'. Creating awareness.

To be honest we must stop all tech development. Any tech is Evil and lead to end of humanity. So I can recommend you to not be scary about deep fakes when AI almost smart as humans and we in 1-5 years from start of singularity. Take easy, relax, you can't stop it. But it will be so pleasure and interesting and may be AI can extend our lives or create fantasy worlds where we can live with magic. Why worry about stupid people who believe in fakes?

It is already being used for scams like the pig-butchering plate, in which hundreds of thousands of lives around the world are being left without money, causing a lot of suffering.

What are the potential benefits of deepfake technology? What are the potential negative consequences? How can we mitigate the negative consequences while still allowing for the technology to be developed?

Technology is not inherently good or bad - it is simply a tool that can be used for a variety of purposes. It is up to us as a society to determine how we use that tool and to take responsibility for the consequences of our actions. While it may be tempting to label certain technologies as "good" or "bad," it is important to remember that the way we use technology is a reflection of our own values and ethics as a society. When contriversial technologies such as this arise, as a society and a collective, we are challenged. An organism can only grow an evolve when it is challenged.

Our "conscious" way of existence sets us apart from every other living thing we know of and its this unique attribute that only humans possess (as far as we know) that allows us to to shape and create our world. When we talk about suppressing this ability by outright ceasing the development of a particular technology then we aren't allowing ourselves to be challenged. We are capable of so much. We aren't stupid, clearly there are technologies that you will never see developed, like a parachute made from fairy floss. Really bad ideas are almost always self limiting. In the case of deepfakes, its not a fairy floss parachute. Its a bit more complicated then that and deserves open dialogue and discussion in society to ensure that it is used in a responsible and ethical manner.

On the benefits side, deepfake technology has the potential to revolutionize industries such as entertainment, journalism, and education. For example, in the entertainment industry, deepfakes can be used to create realistic special effects and bring back actors who have passed away. In journalism, deepfakes can be used to create more realistic and engaging news stories. In education, deepfakes can be used to create virtual simulations that can be used to train professionals in various fields.

On the drawbacks side, deepfakes can also be used for negative purposes such as creating fake news and propaganda, impersonating individuals for financial gain or harassment, and undermining trust in media. It could be used to spread misinformation and create confusion or even social unrest.

Given these potential benefits and drawbacks, it is clear that deepfake technology is not inherently good or bad. It is a tool that can be used for both positive and negative purposes. The question then becomes, how can we ensure that deepfake technology is used for positive purposes while minimizing the potential negative consequences?

One solution could be to regulate the development and use of deepfake technology. For example, laws could be put in place to prevent the use of deepfakes for malicious purposes such as creating fake news or impersonating individuals. Additionally, there could be guidelines developed for industry on how to use deepfakes responsibly.

Another solution could be to educate the public on how to identify and verify deepfakes, so that they are better equipped to spot and report malicious use.

Ultimately, the key to responsible use of deepfake technology is open dialogue and discussion. Society should be engaged in a conversation about the development and use of this technology, so that we can make informed decisions about how to use it in a responsible and ethical manner.

It's important to consider that technology is always advancing and we should be proactive in the way we deal with its emergence. It's important to not to see technology as a problem but as an opportunity to enhance our society. It's crucial to approach new technology with a critical and informed mindset, rather than simply rejecting it outright.

Kundanagrawalofficial commented 1 year ago

this type of conversion really help to develop critical thinking

panki27 commented 1 year ago

Technology is never inherently good nor bad. Any technology is a key, with the ability to open a door to hell, or a door to heaven. It all depends on how it is used. The human factor is the difference.

OpakAlex commented 1 year ago

@alonsoir you can not tell to people which think like kids about cars, or electricity, even this guys will never protest if propaganda will say it's good. You want to speak to 1% of humans man, this will not work, and this tech will be done by idiots anyway, and we will have a problems anyway, just because propaganda will tell they develop future. Dont be angry with idios, because when you are angry you come back to their level, they have more experience on this. The best what you can do, it's find a way how to hack system, we will need it soon, with covid vacince, or with this tech, we will need to hack system, only this.

HWiese1980 commented 1 year ago

@OpakAlex Problems are there to be solved, not avoided. We have to learn as a species from the tech that we develop, instead of avoiding it. Many people died in car and bicycle accidents, killed by tanks. Should we not have invented the wheel in the first place? Every invention can be abused, every invention will be abused. We do not avoid that by avoiding the invention.

OpakAlex commented 1 year ago

@HWiese1980 you are right, but issue, do we know world without wheel? Maybe it would be better, or worst. We dont know, we can see what we have now, internet is good? Depends, people start to be more stupid, because they know how to find easy in google, and stop read books, all is depends. Democracy is good? We need to ask people which country was destroyed for "Democracy", right? All this is depends.
