Proposal: Use a Zoom Landing Page for public calls #549

Open flyingzumwalt opened 6 years ago

flyingzumwalt commented 6 years ago

Let's create a landing page for public calls with orientation info about the call, how recordings will be used, how to participate, etc.

Example: https://edgi-video-call-landing-page.herokuapp.com/https://zoom.us/j/448451934

daviddias commented 6 years ago

👍 from my side. I thought that the proposal was a front page just like https://oracle.zoom.us, which we can also do but would require setting up a IPFS account in Zoom.

flyingzumwalt commented 6 years ago

I think a landing page specifically for the all hands will be worthwhile. I'm especially interested in making sure it includes a link to our Code of Conduct, and possibly a note about our commitment to inclusiveness -- a call with 24 men on it is pretty daunting. I want to get ahead of that before it gets any worse.

Repo for the EDGI one linked above: https://github.com/edgi-govdata-archiving/video-call-landing-page

Is there still interest on this?

olizilla commented 5 years ago

This would be a nice thing to pair-program on. I'd be happy to work with someone to build a static page page using ipfs-css that explains what will happen when the user joins, and is super clear about the code of conduct.

@pkafei are you working on anything like this as part of your changes to the ipfs site to show the all-hands call is coming up?

@flyingzumwalt do you have any thoughts about the content of the page? we can take a first pass and get your review.

Quick logistical question. With almost all Zoom calls at PL, when I click the Zoom link from a calendar link the forwarding is broken, so I get this redirect screen that doesn't actually redirect me:

And I have to click again to actually open the call on the web or in my Zoom app on my laptop. Will our landing page end up in place of this error message, so someone lands on our new landing page and then clicks once more to get into the call, or will they land on this error page, click the Zoom link, hit our error page, and then click again to get into the call?

mikeal commented 5 years ago

That's actually Google Calendar's fault. This doesn't happen to me because I don't use Google Calendar as my calendar viewer. Google wraps any real url anywhere, including GMail, in this forwarding system :(

I don't have this problem with all Zoom links in Google Calendar.

I just tried an experiment and found that within a single calendar event in Google Calendar, if I click on the Zoom link in the location field I hit the non-redirecting redirect page, but if I click it from the notes field I'm redirected successfully immediately. Perhaps someone could try duplicating that experiment from the listing for the "IPFS Community WG Weekly" meeting (Thursdays at 11:30 Eastern) to confirm I'm not hallucinating?

parkan commented 5 years ago

I can confirm that at the moment links from Notes do not send me through the redirect warning page, though I think this is something that can change unannounced at any time.

+1 for landing page for public calls, though ideally we'd have a direct link that was on an internal calendar mirroring the click-through public one

terichadbourne commented 5 years ago

Would it be possible to build a "don't show me this message again" checkbox so someone doesn't have to hit the explanation/instructions if they are a regular participant on the same call?

parkan commented 5 years ago

@terichadbourne you could have a little bit of js to redirect you immediately w/o clicking if you checked a "don't show this again" box/had the cookie, as well

pkafei commented 5 years ago

@olizilla @mikeal I think a page dedicated to the call information is a good idea. And it seems like it has more traction than the alert bar https://github.com/ipfs/website/pull/289. However, when I was speaking to @mikeal there is some tension in the amount of one off microsites we have, and the general organization of our information. Sometimes it is not intuitive where information (like community calls) is located.

I think a microsite that has all of the community sync information is something we should add, but I would also like for us to have a discussion on when we should make a microsite and when we should add information to the existing ipfs.io site.

pkafei commented 5 years ago

Ok, so I discussed this with @terichadbourne IRL, and what I'll do is swap out the Zoom link with a link to the landing page in the alert bar. The landing page will look similar to https://edgi-video-call-landing-page.herokuapp.com/https://zoom.us/j/448451934 and also include a code of conduct.
