The most worrisome part is that I have no idea why it worked for me... 🤦‍♂️

Now I do and I'm an idiot 🤦‍♂️ With our current settings, the package build process ignores subdirectories without __init__.py files, so while stuff worked off the repo, the same files were not shipped in the Python package.
