Create vocabulary for "team associate role" #10

Soccer and baseball have managers, ice hockey and football have coaches. Plus the other assistant roles.

Horse racing has trainers.

I know it's hard to search the existing NewsCodes right now, so I did it (by grepping on the server :-)

We have https://cv.iptc.org/newscodes/eventparticipantrole/ which has "Team" and "Trainer" among other things, and https://cv.iptc.org/newscodes/subjectqualifier/ which has "umpires/referees" and "coaches/trainers/managers" among many others in a bit of a grab-bag of sports and other terms.

Could either of these be adapted or extended to handle what we need? Or do we need to start from scratch with a new CV?

Can we just refer to wikipedia rather than create a new vocab? (Asking on a strictly technical level. I have no idea if all these terms are even in wikipedia.)

maybe we could, but that would leave things WIDE open for users, maybe a bit too wide... how would someone build a user interface around "you can use any term from wikipedia / wikidata"?

Are we trying to handle the fact that trainer/coach/manager is semantically the same thing but just named differently in different sports? [Assuming that's even true... maybe they are different]. Trying to understand if this is a semantic issue or a per-sport naming issue for the same underlying concept.

Or is this more about different associates within the same sport...

How far down the rabbit hole do you want to go? Let's look at skiing: Around the athlete you have: head coach technical coach shoe-technician (shoemaker?) Waxer (and so on)

Around a soccer player you have: Manager Coach Assistant coach In Norwegian we someone called an 'oppmann' which is translated to commander, but that isn't a correct term. An "Oppmann" is someone who makes sure the jerseys are being washed, the dressing room is in order and so on. Making sure all players has something to drink when they are taken off the field. Team doctor Team assistant-doctor

and the list goes on...

Those are good examples and I would say that the model should at least be able to accommodate those terms even if we don't provide the actual vocabularies.

@pauliharman It's per-sport rather than semantic I'd say. Even if we repeated "coach" in a bunch of different CVs that's fine coz otherwise we have to worry too much about how each sport defines it.
