Proposal to Rename the IRCv3 Repository to "BrandNewFlashyWebChat"

First and foremost, I'd like to express my appreciation for the hard work and innovation that the IRCv3 Working Group has put into the development of chat protocol enhancements. My intention with this proposal is to suggest that the name of the repository better reflect the content and direction it seems to be taking.

Rationale:

  1. Divergence from Traditional IRC: As I've observed, the features, functionalities, and overall experience the IRCv3 repository offers seem to have significantly diverged from the original principles and simplicity of IRC. Instead, it mirrors features and interactions one might expect from platforms like Discord or Slack.

  2. Clarity for New Users: Renaming the repository to "BrandNewFlashyWebChat" or something similar would give potential new users a clearer indication of what to expect, reducing potential confusion between traditional IRC and the innovations of IRCv3.

  3. Honoring Originality: While borrowing features from modern platforms is by no means negative, it's essential to recognize and differentiate when our project takes on a unique identity. A new name could celebrate this evolution.

  4. Rebranding Opportunity: A fresh name might not only be more descriptive but could also act as a rebranding opportunity, drawing attention and curiosity from both former IRC users and those familiar with modern chat platforms.

Conclusion: While I hold immense respect for IRC's legacy, it's crucial that our nomenclature accurately reflects the content and direction of our projects. Renaming the IRCv3 repository to "BrandNewFlashyWebChat" or a similar name can provide clarity, honor our project's unique trajectory, and pave the way for future innovations.

I kindly invite the community to discuss this proposal, considering the long-term benefits and implications of such a change.

This argument applies equally well to network services, secure connections, and many other features that modern networks offer which were not part of the original specification. This suggestion leaves me wondering how much of IRC's history you are familiar with.

Considering the derisiveness of the proposed new name, I do not read a lot of kindness here, but all the same: upon consideration, the only benefit I can see to this proposal is to stroke the ego of users would like some kind of formalized 'purity' to distinguish them from other net services they consider to be 'lesser' in some very nebulous fashion.

-1 from me.

Something about this screams AI generated issue submission to me.

I wouldn't go with your gut on this one. It's a pretty valid point tbh.

Divergence from Traditional IRC

Clarity for New Users

Honoring Originality

Rebranding Opportunity

expanding the core protocol to more properly handle today's use cases is careful evolution as i see it, not divergence. renaming the repo would give old and new users zero expectations on what to expect because the brand identity would be completely destroyed and turn ircv3 from a modernization passion project into another random chat project in an oversaturated space. i'm here because we're talking about IRC. i won't go so far as to say you made the issue in bad faith, but this kind of issue where you suggest changing such a core aspect of a project while not having that much of a stake in it isn't generally welcome in most open source projects and you can color me very surprised its gotten nearly as many upvotes as it has.

Probably the topic starter asked all his friends to upvote this, that's why. But this is not exactly a democracy anyway, so you can simply ignore these upvotes.

@acidvegas which project related to IRC are you representing? or which user group perhaps?

I mean, you're free to write an IRC client and advertise it as BrandNewFlashyWebChat, I'm not going to stop you

The person you're dealing with is an IRC troll who deals w/ his miserable life by pointlessly spamming as many IRC networks/servers/channels w/ his Python toy script as possible. I'd suggest closing this instead of feeding him any more attention. Just my 2 cents.
