[#257] Add documentation for meta dict #268

Addresses #257

I'm not documenting everything because this is truly an implementation detail and I would like to update the names of the keys one day (maybe a 2.0.0 thing). I'm also okay with not merging this at all and we just close the issue as invalid. Either way.
