Cherry-pick of #9 into stable. Addresses #7 and irods/irods#4650. Addresses #8 with the quick-n-dirty solution. Proper fix for #8 will come with irods/irods#5250. I've also bumped the required iRODS version number to 4.2.9.

I haven't been able to fully test building this branch of this repo yet, so further changes might be needed to reach the stated goal. That said, I am reasonably certain that these changes are necessary to get this branch building.
