I'm not having any success using the away status notifications on EFNet. Every time irssi is supposed to check away status, it always spits out the message "WHOIS Server load is temporarily too heavy. Please wait a while and try again." on every single check interval (the default, 5 minutes) and on multiple servers. Yet I can always do manual /whois, both remote and local, without problems. And this is with only three nicks with away status checks on my notify list.
I believe that what's happening is that irssi is sending the /whois requests way too quickly. If I paste a few prewritten lines of remote /whois commands all at once, I get the same "server load" error. If I enter them one by one, it always works.
Therefore, the automatic WHOIS requests should be throttled down to something reasonable, like one request every few seconds, not many requests in less than a second. For now, the notify feature is pretty much rendered unusable because of this.
