I've tried both znc and bip as IRC proxies. Both of them have the ability to send backscroll to my client when I re-attach. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that the backscroll is sent prior to fully joining the channel. Regardless, other IRC clients seem to handle this without issue. For example, Limechat.
