I followed the irssi guide on libera.chat but I am getting this error and I am not sure what to do as I have never used irc before:

either your username is wrong, or your password is wrong, or you haven't registered your email yet. did you follow this guide: https://github.com/shabble/irssi-docs/wiki/liberachat#configure-sasl-automated-log-in ?

You need to verify your email. Find the email from libera and follow the instruction in it

you need to connect to libera without VPN and from your local ISP in order to register and confirm your email

Connecting when disconnected from vpn seems to work but this raises another question. How can I protect my ip address as I don't want it available to other people and it seems to be publicly available

after completing the nickname registration and email verification successfully, the network will protect your IP address from regular users

(if you /join #libera-cloak once identified :) you'll be banned immediately but also cloaked)

I tried to /join #libera-cloak and it gave me this:

Apparently you should be cloaked already if you are verified and identified https://libera.chat/news/autocloaking
