Full width wiki pages #346

Open tymorrow opened 9 years ago

tymorrow commented 9 years ago

It would be nice if wiki pages could be configured to display at different widths. Looks like they're about ~80% now (which isn't the worst), but I can think of times when I wished I could set them to full width, or at least have them wrap the sidebar on the right once then content descends far enough. I'm thinking of large images or table with a lot of data.

Just a thought.

You may find useful 'Wide My Github' userstyle.

tymorrow commented 9 years ago

Thanks @muchweb, I found that interesting. Ultimately, not what I am looking for.

At least make it such that the width changes once the sidebar is folded....

It's lame that at a time when most developers have 27"+ monitors on their desks, you have to scroll horizontally to see any code wider than 80 characters in a quoted block on a github wiki page.

Not everyone uses wiki for code snippets. On Mar 7, 2016 11:08 PM, "Warren Fernandes" notifications@github.com wrote:

I vote for this too. I do use GitHub Toggle Wiki Sidebar and GitHub Word Wrapping for Code Blocks userscripts via Tampermonkey, which help, but I need to toggle off Sidebar everytime and not every team member would go through the trouble of installing these things.

When you edit the wiki page, you see a much wider view. This is because consuming content like this SHOULD be on a wider format.

How many other "wikis" have this limitation?

garylawuk commented 6 years ago

+1 it's really painful with pages that contain tables.

YenForYang commented 6 years ago

YES. +1. It gets incredibly annoying.

letby commented 5 years ago

It makes tables annoying - we use the wiki extensively to document our systems so being able to increase the wiki page width beyond what it is would be beneficial to me.

ole-optiopay commented 5 years ago

+1 for me, too. And not only for wikis as I have coworkers who 'force' me to have a maximum line length of 80 characters in code only for better github PR reviews.

But images and tables are a real issue, too. We don't use a wiki so much but '.md' files in the code repositories.

IcySon55 commented 5 years ago

I really need the wiki to be full width. We write small coding tutorials in it and most of the time we have to scroll horizontally to see the complete code examples.

Sh0wdown commented 5 years ago

+1 At the moment the wiki wastes a lot of unused space on the left and right.

james-bi commented 5 years ago

+1 This should be easy to change as well

jlczuk commented 5 years ago

This was opened in 2015 and noone responds or acts on it?!?! That's just ridiculous.

The comments, code, issues, wiki, pages all use maybe 1/3 of the screen for main content like these very comments. That is just inefficient and a total waste.

Fix it or make it configurable, but DO SOMETHING.

wwalker commented 5 years ago

PLEASE fix this. Make it optional.

jzadaptrum commented 5 years ago

total agree above guys' comments to fix this issue, otherwise ...

It's 2020, and the tables in the wiki looks bad. I paid to have a wiki function for private repo, but it looks ugly and useless

wwalker commented 4 years ago

Please fix this. It's been 5 years now.

You'll notice that no one has commented "don't make it wider"!!
