Ability to remove profile picture without uploading a new one #668

Open mwhite opened 8 years ago

mwhite commented 8 years ago

Am I missing something? This is really annoying.

andreynering commented 8 years ago

As a workaround, you can download your original identicon and upload as your profile picture:

Just wanted to switch back to gravatar but can't find such option any longer.

itmir913 commented 7 years ago

Thanks for your advice!

ahogen commented 7 years ago

Please please please.

I'd really like to keep profile pictures synced across sites. Gravatar makes this really easy.

robivictor commented 7 years ago

I need this to get fixed soon, github.

pyrossh commented 7 years ago

Yes Please. Give Gravatar some love man.

+1 for a 'reset profile picture' button

digvijayky commented 6 years ago

https://help.github.com/articles/setting-your-profile-picture/

You can download and reset your profile picture to your designated identicon at https://github.com/identicons/USERNAME.png

michaeldayCA commented 6 years ago

@digvijayky I've already done that, but a reset profile picture or clear profile picture button is a single click and a more convenient user experience than a multi-step download and re-upload process.

jmvezic commented 6 years ago

I gotta agree here, this seems like a very basic feature that needs to be implemented.

rkrause2 commented 6 years ago

A collaborator on a project that I contribute to recently said that I look "creepy" and "scary" in my profile picture because apparently I'm not supposed to look like a human being. So I'm trying to figure out how I delete the profile picture entirely from GitHub, but there is no option to do something as simple as that even while there are all manner of options to buy apps and other paid services. I see this issue is 2 years old. How long does it take to add a simple "Delete Picture" button that every other online service already has? I finally had to create a second account to use GitHub till this is resolved.

NobbZ commented 6 years ago

@rkrause2 The creepy thing which looks a bit like an M in your avatar picture is the fallback github generates for you when you do not have added a picture.

I do consider those distinguishable stub-avatars as very important, as they allow me to recognize participants of a discussion as individuals and even associate parts of the conversations. I were not able to distinguish members of a conversation without the visual information these avatars provide.

If all avatars of people that do not provide one on their own were unified (eg. the white person siluette on blue-grey ground as it was common years ago) I had big trouble to follow discussions in github or similar plattforms.

If though you prefer a more generic avatar feel free to upload it, you will still be unique enough for people like me in the thread to get recognized.

And please explain your co-workers why those automatically avatars are actually a good thing.

There are also a couple of other algorithms to generate those, but the most common three are easily recognizable as auto-generated.

rkrause2 commented 6 years ago

This isn't the account with the picture I want to delete.

Can we do this for organisation as well?

doremaster commented 5 years ago

This still isn't fixed. Just made a new account and it pulled in a gravatar from somewhere, and was unable to remove it.

https://github.com/settings/profileEdit button on profile pic → Remove Photo?

bluesmoon commented 5 years ago

@TPS This works for individual accounts but not for organizations.

TPS commented 5 years ago

@bluesmoon, &c: For orgs, I recommend opening a new issue, referring here, as I believe that's important, but somewhat not quite this original issue. Of course, recording contact w/ @GitHub specifically re: that should be a priority there.

https://github.com/settings/profileEdit button on profile pic → Remove Photo?

Here's what I see: https://i.imgur.com/JZt4rBf.png I clicked into the Organizations link on the left side and it says "You are not a member of any organizations." and there's a link below it saying I can transform my account into one.

Maybe I checked something during signup that I shouldn't have? Or maybe because my email address was already registered to a gravatar it assumed I was an organization on the backend?

TPS commented 5 years ago

For those of us who don't Imgur, @doremaster's screenshot linked above: JZt4rBf_d

Does anyone else see this? Or recently find that it's very difficult to actually get into Settings anymore? 😖

@doremaster That's weird. Obviously @GitHub thinks you're not an org (wrong options on left). Have you tried reverting to Gravatar, & seeing what options then? Also, tried contacting @GitHub? It either seems like UI weirdness, or an outright bug in your profile.…

cuongle commented 4 years ago

It's 2020, and this bug has not been fixed?

taimoorgit commented 4 years ago

As of 2020 this is still a bug! Only the 'Upload a photo...' dialog appears. You have to actually upload a new photo, then the page refreshes, then you can click on 'Revert to Gravatar'

doremaster commented 4 years ago

@TPS I have not tried reaching out to them, but I think you're right that I should contact @github as I'm still encountering this issue nearly a year later. The only options are Upload a new photo and Revert to Gravatar.

This was a brand new account so I was really surprised when I already had an image.. I did sign up using a very old email address though.. Maybe the email was somehow linked up to a Gravatar account that was possibly created a decade ago?

edit: Yup, just found the Gravatar creation email from 2011 in my archives.

Actually nevermind, this doesn't even work after clicking on Revert! Not good >:(

hschaeidt commented 4 years ago

Same issue here as @dskrepps . No option to revert to gravatar (although my primary e-mail address has an associated gravatar)
