Changes on line no.105 of unwrap_fringe.py based on issue #52. You're right @vbrancat the metadata should be initially set to None. Pls. check if the fix works for you.

I thought it was easier to address the issue myself. This is done in PR #53. Please, take a moment to review it. It worked for me on a Linux platform.
