Inconsistency between textual definition and hierarchical position of "biorepository" #186

In ERO a biorepository is defined as: A storage facility of biospecimens that includes tissue samples, fluids, and molecular derivatives such as DNA, RNA, and proteins. The biorepository has stringent guidelines regarding the standardized collection, handling, storage, and documentation of biological specimens.

However, "biorepository" is a subclass of "organization.

This two conflict. "Facilities" are not organizations )I hope we agree on that. Furthermore, this definition seems not to allow making a difference between a biobank organization (the organization running a biobank) and the actual facility. What do you do with biobank organizations that run different facilities?

Have updated the definition to read:

"An organization that governs the storage of biospecimens that includes tissue samples, fluids, and molecular derivatives such as DNA, RNA, and proteins. The biorepository has stringent guidelines regarding the standardized collection, handling, storage, and documentation of biological specimens."

The differentiation between the biorepository facility and the biorepository organization has been discussed in the past and it is an ongoing issue. For now, we've corrected the definition for our purposes.

Hey,

thanks. I talked to Carlo a little about the issue in San Francisco and I was wondering whether you don't share the feeling that both ERO and OMIABIS ( http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/omiabis.owl ) could benefit from using the same definition. I, as a developer of OMIABIS would be willing to work with you until we reach mutual agreement. Let me know what you think: mbrochhausen@gmail.com

After talking this over internally, because of time crunch for patch release we will leave the definition as follows:

"An organization that governs the storage of biospecimens that includes tissue samples, fluids, and molecular derivatives such as DNA, RNA, and proteins. The biorepository has stringent guidelines regarding the standardized collection, handling, storage, and documentation of biological specimens."

I will leave this issue open and we will revisit with Mathias.
