Empathy Map

What

An empathy map is a collaborative tool teams can use to gain a deeper insight into their customers. It is meant to identify and represent attitudinal and behavioral user outcomes for specific features or products.

Why

Build consensus. Manage expectations. Provide context.

How to do it

For an existing project (i.e. Service Year), complete an empathy map for all new features. Populate the one-pager by referencing existing Voice & Tone guides, personas, and/or Style Tiles/Component Libraries to ensure the new feature will be consistent with existing styles, and designed as efficiently as possible.

For a new project, this can be completed pre-backlog or requirements gathering to identify the clients' vision for the product. This can also serve as a preliminary framework for creating Voice & Tone guides, Style Tiles, and personas. Repeat this exercise for new features down the road to realign on goals.

Format of Output

One-pager that's filled out by/with the client (see examples below).
