Slack access? #31

Open chrisdonahue opened 5 years ago

chrisdonahue commented 5 years ago

Hello,

I would like to join the ISMIR Slack channel. I submitted my email through https://launchpass.com/mircommunity but I never heard back. Is this supposed to enroll me automatically or should I just be patient and wait for someone to approve my membership?

Cheers, Chris

good question! I'm not sure where is the best place to triage this – the Slack workspace was set up by an ISMIR community member separate of the website, but I can bump this issue in slackspace to get to an answer.

also, now that we've cut over to ismir/ismir-home I had been hoping to archive / deprecate this repository ... however, your issue raises an interesting idea: would a general "ISMIR web" repo be a good place to field general inquiries, rather than email which doesn't have any transparency (and thus weaker accountability) and doesn't let anyone see past questions. the community list has been used for things like that in the past, but it's quite big now and not the greatest "support" forum.

Ah my bad. Didn't know about ismir-home. This ismir_web repo is still a top search result for "ismir slack" because of issue #17 .

GitHub does feel like a better option than the email list for fielding general inquiries, but I also wouldn't want to bifurcate discussions in our already-small community. Speaking of bifurcation, I didn't even know there was a Slack channel until someone mentioned it on the mailing list :) . I suppose some lag is inevitable when migrating to newer/better platforms though.

... My very roundabout way of saying I am not sure what the right decision is here

ha, no kidding – thanks for the heads up on that, it makes me realize that the slack logo on the ISMIR homepage is insufficient for SEO. 20+ years later and webbing is still hard  I've added a new issue tho to track this, great catch 👍💯

agreed, unsure of what to do. that said, I generally fall on the side of not worrying too much about spreading ourselves too thin over communication channels. the mailing list has evolved more into an announcement channel, whereas there's more discussion / help / troubleshooting on slack – which makes sense, as the mailing list is like 3k addresses at this point. General issues / problems in slack could work ... so long as the issue isn't "how do i get into slack" 😄

🤔

@chrisdonahue Hi! 👋 I'm the ISMIR Community Member who started the MIR Community Slack. Thanks to @ejhumphrey for poking me about this issue.

I submitted my email through https://launchpass.com/mircommunity but I never heard back.

Hmm... this is surprising. The system appears to still be working, as we've had two new confirmed users join since you posted this Issue. Can you verify that the automated response email didn't wind up in your Spam folder? If not, perhaps try entering your email a second time? (Maybe there was a typo... esppecially likely if you're using receent Apple hardware [← case in point - those were not intentional, just left uncorrected]...)

Hi Eric. Thanks for getting back to me. After trying many things I finally was able to get an invite. Basically what was happening is that when I pressed "Join Now" the button displayed the spinner but then nothing happened. No indication of failure or success, so I assumed I was just waiting for an email.

Ultimately it seemed like I had to disable my adblocker for this to work? But also, even after I did that, I still had to click several times to get it to work. Was able to reproduce and took a video (I turned off the adblocker after test2@test.com but my screen recorder didn't capture that for some reason).

It seems like it's kind of a flaky sign up page :/

ericdrobinson commented 5 years ago

@chrisdonahue Hmm... if you still have the environment that causes the issue (looks like Firefox? perhaps with the adblocker enabled?) do you happen to see any errors or warnings in the Web Console?

Regardless, I'm glad to hear that you were able to get signed up and apologize for the headache the process caused. We currently use a third party service to assist in sending Slack invites and it seems that we may need to make them aware of this issue. Any further information you can provide would be helpful in this endeavor.

@chrisdonahue @ejhumphrey I just spoke with someone over at Launchpass referenced this issue, pointing to the video and image you supplied. They were able to quickly identify that there appears to be an issue with Firefox blocking their error tracking script (they use Rollbar) which breaks the page. They're now aware of the issue and looking into it!

Thanks so much for the help identifying the issue here!

[For the record, I think it's probably safe to close this issue now.]
