I am using byet host and i unzipped and uploaded the open bay master folder to the ftp via file zilla. but i don't know how to continue after step 4 (https://github.com/isohuntto/openbay/wiki/shared-hosting-guide). i visited the website but it doesnt show any installer

From what I understand, you have to use a dedicated domain or subdomain. You can't just unzip this into a subdirectory and expect it to work, yet. (There's an open issue #95 for this.)

AlanGreyjoy commented 9 years ago

Sub domains are sub directories.

Cpanel - Create subdomain - >upload rar to that folder (the folder should be the name of the subdomain, ie: tpb.somesite.com, folder would be named tpb - >unrar- >move everything that was inside that rar to the ROOT of that subdomain / or public-html folder if you are not using a subdomian. Go to your website and start the installation.

What the main problem is, if you are on hosted, 99% you are unlikely to run sphinx. Most hosts will give you ssh.. but most shared hosts run apache on ruby. The last version to run on ruby is 2.1.1. This will leave you to only use their shpinx search and their database.. doesn't sound to bad? Wait till their end goes down, then your entire website is useless whitespace for advertisement to their streaming app. Or you maybe on the other side of the globe of their servers... in that case, your site would drag like swollen horse balls in the mud xD

This entire thing is crazy to me. It literally takes 10 mins to replicate the pirate bay's website. Maybe another 15 to setup comments and login/profiles.

Just google PHP/MYSQl tutorials. Once you have that down (an hour or so) you'll be able to recreate tpb in 10 mins. Once you get that, then google "shipnx search mysql tutorials". Boom... you have the next pirate bay. You may notice that you can run the site with only a PHP->Mysql search.. but once you get to a maaasive database, your servers cpu will shit all over it's self. Hence the need for sphinx.

Now if you want to make a elaborate site like ka or isohunt... then that would take a lot longer.

wow.. that was not ment to be a wall of text lol.

wolnavi commented 9 years ago

after seeing that what i need to do, ill think ill just close my hosting account because it sounds too complicated for me lol, can you link me yours? ill think ill use yours

AlanGreyjoy commented 9 years ago

Um... That's another problem.. it's fucking EXPENSIVE to host offshore lol. I have my site on a protected subdomain for a video game I am making.. It's fully 100% like TPB was lol. Comments, profiles, etc... but I have to convince the wife to let me pay for offshore hosting and convince her that I won't get caught xD

Sphider is another php search engine.. but I am not sure how it would handle massive torrent databases

wolnavi commented 9 years ago

why not use a free hosting one?

AlanGreyjoy commented 9 years ago

Put it this way... 17 servers ran TPB once upon a time... you need more than just free hosting lol. Searches are cpu heavy

Webcare360 is a hosting company that I am currently looking at

wolnavi commented 9 years ago

Wow I didn't know that lol

nexusrain commented 9 years ago

Why arent you taking a look at my guide.. Its now updated and also explains, how to host the database on your own server. See here: https://www.bitforce.io/hacking/howto-setup-openbay-on-debian-ubuntu-with-nginx-1-6-2/
