This is really kind of pointless isn't it? #53

There is quite a lot of work to be done with this for it to be a standalone. There's no user features. i.e. user registration/login/management, no administration features i.e. torrent management, user management, backup, edit etc...

In essence, this is just a forward facing page, with isohunt's torrents. or more simply put, this is a lot of code, just to replace an iframe

ghost commented 9 years ago

As far as I know, The Pirate Bay is just an index of some public BitTorrent trackers. They don't control what gets uploaded there.

Well said. As it is this app is so totally limited I'm unclear what the direction is supposed to be here. Or said another way: "I was told there would be PirateBay code."

RobNuts commented 9 years ago

Yeah this isn't PirateBay code. Just a tribute site that is basically just a frontend to display a backup of tpb or wherever isohunt got the data from. Most recent torrent I see on this is from 6 days ago. Does this even include scripts to keep torrents up to date? Or is it, like I said, just a frontend displaying a db backup? Their db is pretty messy as well. I'm pretty sure there aren't 5 year old aXXo torrents that are less than 1mb with 9 million seeders.

gh0st19 commented 9 years ago

The web page said it comes with scripts to auto update the database but I couldn't find them. My most recent torrent is from 6 days ago as well.

booth-f commented 9 years ago

@RobNuts well obviously the torrents won't stay up to date and as Isohunt already stated the database file containing the 8 million torrents is a one time thing that they are not going to keep updated, it really comes down to the administration of the mirror site and if we ever create an upload script for new torrents to be added.

jrgp commented 9 years ago

Isn't the goal of this project to allow users without IT skills to run a "home" torrent site on a shared server host?

If the only way of getting torrents onto here is to use a database dump from IsoHunt, I don't think people are going to want to use it, and web hosts definitely are not going to want to host it due to questionable content.

RobNuts commented 9 years ago

@tranquilitycal When I installed it the other night I just went by what I saw advertised on their site and the small instructions on this git. Didn't see much info explained. "This code will enable individuals with minimal IT skills, and basic server equipment to create a Pirate Bay clone on their own domain." They seem to pawn it off as a pirate bay clone when it's not. If the torrents and seeder/leech counts aren't live then they seem to just be a reflection from an iffy database of a static snapshot. Kinda lame to be honest. Just a static frontend with links to their streaming service. I don't know all the technicalities of torrenting as I'm more of a usenet person as I run a usenet indexer myself. I'm all up for hosting a torrent tracker/indexer but this doesn't appear to be for that. A pirate bay clone would at least run software to track torrents. Might want to reword some things for clarity.

ghost commented 9 years ago

@RobNuts As far as I know the pirate bay was NOT running a torrent tracker anymore? I agree on the other points but that's why we're on Github right? To develop new features.

wakaru44 commented 9 years ago

Agree with HiddenKn. The problem is clear, so I think the goal is too. If you have a better way to achieve it, then the project needs your collaboration. I find this as the starting point of involved people distributedly. Creating tools to update it automaticlly, are really really simple to make.

ArcAIN6 commented 9 years ago

The issue isn't updating the torrents from isohunt, that, as you stated, is quite simple to do.

The issue is the site is severely lacking.

1) Inability to manage, maintain, edit, upload, delete, or otherwise manipulate the torrents listed. 2) Inability to manage, maintain, edit, invite, ban, or otherwise have user accounts. 3) Default install, without isohunt torrent database import, shows Isohunt has deliberately created fake torrent links within the site's torrent database to advertise their site, and their services within the torrent list. 4) Branding branding everywhere, and not a bit i sense used. Isohunt branded into header image, footer, and some random div at the end of the torrent list. essential you see links to isohunt twice at the bottom.. how nifty 0o 5) Lack of purpose. Seriously, all this site does, is create a web of torrent sites all with the same exact content, no legitimate way to add torrents, so in the end, 10,000 sites, all with the exact same content, which means a harder time for people to locate legitimate torrent sites.

A legitimate torrent site is one being actively administered, where dead, dumb, or duplicate torrents are weeded out of the mix, And user participation, and interaction makes the site as a whole better.

Basically.. everything this lame-duck site is not.

Instead of complaining about free and open software please open proper tickets regarding specific problems or fix the problem yourself. This is a ticket system, not a forum. (Unsubscribed )

It would be great if multiple sites could communicate with each other, by adding trusted other openbay sites to your own list, and then sharing recently added torrents or users and things like that, but not too much information.

It all depends on if people are interested in working on that sort of thing though, the project seems to be in it's early days still.

It does not only contain torrents from Isohunt. It contains the best torrents from TPB, Kickass AND IH. The sense of it - how I understood it - is, that there are too many copies out there of all those torrents, that it's impossible, to take all sites down. So even if the "parent sites" are going down, there are a lot of copies of them. So the torrents will stay alive a long time. And that there are no (direct) functions like adding new to's, accounting and so on.. Well, the parent sites for sure want to stay the parents and don't give EVERYTHING to all the children / copies. And adding torrents isn't really a big problem. Just add them in the database and there they are. It's not really user friendly, but it is definitely possible. It is named a copy, not a CMS. Keep that in mind.

Nexus, I understand it's only a copy at the moment, but this project has a lot of potential, if people are interested. If we could develop a reliable system, resistant to eavesdropping, we could basically create a new, fully functional, piratebay that's decentralized over many servers. The owners wanted to have it distributed amongst the cloud, and we could make that dream come true.

If we eventually want to live in a world where information is free, we should probably concentrate on maintaining and improving the longevity and reliability of sites and communities like the piratebay. To do that we need to have a strong, large, unified community, otherwise all the copies and clones will just stagnate, becoming irrelevant and unused. I mean, we could possibly extend the lifespan of the pirate bay well past any of our own if we think that's a goal worth working towards.

nexusrain commented 9 years ago

@megaspel Yea, this sounds really quite good. But I couldn't help with php development - I'm not pretty good in php. Instead, I started an Android app yesterday - the XYLiZBay which is going to have the following functions:

-it is unbound to a specific server. It just requires a server backend which are just some small php's. Not even MySQL is required. -accounting (registering & login) -uploading torrent file -browse recent torrents -search torrents for sure -download torrents using external app (BitTorrent f.e.) -maybe rate & comment torrents

Well, I know it really makes not much sense to have a torrent service as Android app but I can develop some stuff for Android - instead of in php. I can't develop whole webpages in php. However, I will upload the app later (when the next release is reade) including a backend URL (hosted by me, for sure) and post.

@megaspel As I was reading this topic, I was quite astonished to see noone bring this idea on the table. And I have to say: thank you! It is the right step to be fully decentralized. I think the idea was already exploited - slightly differently - by the diaspora* social network (see https://diasporafoundation.org/about). I'm not the most technically qualified person to assert this, but I'm pretty sure it's adaptable to a torrent website such as TPB. Anyway... I just wanted to show my support to this idea!
