Translated website #951

Open delahee opened 5 years ago

delahee commented 5 years ago

Hello,

I also work in a book publishing house (http://papitou.com) and thought it would be awesome to get rid of amazon and use Itch to distribute ebooks. Sadly as our audience is French, and struggles with English, we stumbled on the problem that the website does not appear in french to french users with french as their favourite browsing language.

It would be awesome to have the website available in other languages than english, like german, french, spanish, italian, etc etc...it would open up many possibilities.

Thanks!

I agree! It's something we want to tackle this year. Strings on the website aren't parameterized for translation right now, but once that happens we'll set up a translation page like we do for the app.

Thanks :)

I actually just started setting up the i18n system for the website last night. @fasterthanlime on our team speaks French so that will probably be one of the first languages we support. If you (or anyone reading) are interested in participating in translating then tell me and I can help set you up.

On a shot term, I am sick and occupied this week-end but sure we can help next week if need be. @fasterthanlime, don't hesitate to hit me when needed!

Bye!

@leafo As with the itch app, I can do Russian translation.

leafo commented 5 years ago

Thanks @quyse,

If you want to start messing around, I've created a new repo with instructions: https://github.com/itchio/itchio-i18n

And I setup a page on weblate here: https://weblate.itch.ovh/projects/itchio/itchio/

Please read this section for an overview of the markup syntax.

I added a Russian project for you, I'm not sure why it says 100% right now since it's empty. You should be able to go through it regardless.

I'm still in the process of extracting strings, so only a small subset is there. Additionally, none of the languages are deployed to production yet. I'm waiting to have more strings extracted and translated.

For anyone else reading this, if you'd like to take a shot at it, tell me what language you'd like to work on if it isn't already there.

fasterthanlime commented 5 years ago

@delahee the 1 and 2 here are to help you insert those tags (with Ctrl+1, Ctrl+2), they shouldn't be part of the translated string!

Aw sorry !

I am not quite sure about the tone so i'll just skim through getting a large cover fast and let Amos explain what tone he wants? Or maybe you already have a style guide?

delahee commented 5 years ago

Also there is "for free" here and there, I am not quite sure it is legal in Europe to hint "for free" when there are purchases fees and royalties rate as is can be considered misleading ( there were ruling about this). Side effects is "free" culture ( as in not paying but not freedom ) but that is more subjective.

Amos : I'll keep all the "free" stuff for now but you may want to check out the situation.

I'm not sure either! I'm adding a few strings to the glossary, see

There's a lot of "You can do X by doing Y" which translate funny to French, I like it better when websites use the passive voice, I guess we'll see over time.

Can you link me to the rulings? If it says anywhere that you can "sell your game for free" then that definitely needs to be adjusted - if it's just "create your page for free" then that's probably ok?

delahee commented 5 years ago

I can't find them back as "free" keywords are... very pollluted. let's settle on your last sentence, if I stumble back on something I consider borderline, I'll just report it back to you.
