One of the assignments from my AMI course is a "DIY Montessori-Inspired Mobile"
On Sunday, the next day I came back from London, I went shopping for all the things I needed to get started on this project. Unfortunately, I'm not done YET, but I will share what I have done so far. It takes time. ๐ My goal for this project is to:
1) get a pass from Heidi ๐ฅ
2) be used as potential content for BMH blog ๐ป
3) also be used ( and tested ๐ ) by baby # 2.... as gift โค๏ธ ๐ถ
I just wanted to mention that my dedication to my third goal was real. I went to 5 stores to find the correct amount of shade colors and the only ones they had available in the first four stores were within the purple variety.... and we don't like ๐ฃ purple ๐ , so I went with happy ๐ก yellow.
For who
Intended for babies 7-10 weeks of age
Why
The purpose of this mobile is to help refine the child's developing sense of sight by providing a slight change in tone from one ball to the next. It allows the baby to practice adjusting their focus from the ball that's closest to their face to the one that's farthest away.
What you will need:
-Super glue
-Scissors โ๏ธ
-Pencil/pen ๐
-Keyring
-Crochet hook ๐ช of 6mm
-Styrofoam balls ๐:
just 5 will be enough for this project, and I went with 60mm/6cm diameter
-Wooden dowel ๐ชต:
Got it at the construction store. 1cm diameter & sand and cut it to about 45 cm in length.
-Yarn ๐งถ:
I chose to wrap the styrofoam balls in yarn in 5 varying shades of yellow color that differ from each other ever so slightly / ranging from lightest to darkest
-Ruler ๐
I didn't have one in hand, so I just I used a (free) paper measuring tape I picked up at the construction store.
How
1) Use the pointy side of the Crochet hook to make a hole straight through the center of each styrofoam ball. Don't worry if the holes aren't perfectly centered in the middle of the ball, just try your best.
2) Once you have made the hole, push the crochet hook through the hole a couple more times to widen the hole a bit more. The widen hole will make it much easier for you to thread later on. You can see below what mine look like:
3) Pick one one of the yarns and make it a tight knot in the hook part of the crochet
4) You can now start stringing the yarn through the hole and around the styrofoam ball multiple time. This process can take quite a long time as the goal here is to cover the entire styrofoam ball until you can't see the white anymore. Pro tip: In order to prevent the yarn from moving, make sure to tie it off after the very first thead. (ADD PHOTO HERE?) Because we will hang the balls onto the mobile using the yarn, it's very important o leave out at least ? cm, so that you will have enough yarn to wrap around the dowel a couple of times.
FInal product of the first ball:
Managed to get my dad to help with second one:
I will keep editing this as I work on this project this week.
