Docker: proper tags or deprecate? #969

add additional tags to help users better pin their ci/cd processes to known/tested versions. /an immutable tag?

Yes. Sounds like we need an epic to improve packaging.

or drop completely due to:

they are not intended for production, just for examples (and we can shift our examples to other images, e.g. nvidia/cuda, tensorflow/tensorflow, NGC etc.)
complexity of production maintenance is high^1
we already have setup actions on GH
we already have easy-to install binary packages on other platforms

On the immutable tag front, while not pointing users directly to the option I feel it is a small lift to additionally tag images with the commit-ish or full commit hash that triggered the build.
