We should start to learn the ropes with an existing spritesheet, not to exhaust ourselves right away.
A technique to split said GIF-images from, for example, Piskel results may be handy.
This here "GIF to Sheet" image splitter seems to be capable of, instead just splitting an GIF-image into several PNG-images to put into a sheet yourself, this tool does that for you after certain inputs: http://forum.chaos-project.com/index.php?topic=11601.0
Although no screenshots seems functional for pre-use info nor does it seem like it offers any OS X support, it would be wise to try at home just like the potential VGM-converter.
We are gonna need an animated sprite as the "hero" running around gathering points, beating bad guys and what not. To start, nothing fancy is required but a 2 to 3 frame walk/run animation. Other necessities are jumping, getting hurt and fainting. Possibly also crouching. Piskel is an efficient browser tool for creating GIF-images.
