Add option to disable casting in existing Android TV / Lollipop cast settings #572

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
It would be idea to allow a user to disable casting on a device if they so
choose (perfectly reasonable to have the default be Allowed)

We believe there will be many instances where Android TV will be used in places
with wifi accessed by many, but not want to allow any random person on the same
network to start casting.

I realize app isolation can be turned on in routers and seperate wifi hotspots
can be setup but based on so many other features being controllable via
settings it is a shame that this is not one of them.

Apologies in advance if there is more appropriate place to post this request.

Can you explain the reason for this request?

Note that even if Cast is disabled, users on the same WiFi network can use the
Android TV Remote Control application to control the device. I don't believe
the software remote can be disabled for users on the network.

We believe Android TV as a platform is likely to be used in semi pubic places
(think a dentist lobby). If the dentist is already allowing access to their
public wifi, anyone sitting in the lobby could take control of the TV. If there
was a way to restrict external devices from simply taking control (Via casting
or remote control app) that could be a very useful feature. Of course by
default this restriction would be off. A simple setting that allows or
restricts connections from casting, the remote control app or any other similar
features that are open by default would be welcome.

I would like to +1 this request. In my case I have a Sony TV with android tv
built in. I also have an Nvidia shield console connected to that tv. When
someone on my network uses the cast feature they are prompted to choose which
device. In my case I always want the shield used because the TV's output does
not go through my receiver and my receiver does not support ARC. I would like
to disable casting to the TV's OS so that it does not show up as an option. I
realize that while this is one of those "training issues" being able to disable
casting would be handy.

I am eager for the time when AndroidTV is running on smaller and more low end
displays bringing that level of functionality to rooms other than the master
viewing area but I think a lot of folks who are breaking out the various
components will like to keep their smart device outside of their display
device. It is way more practical for me to buy a new $200-$300 steaming box
every couple years than to buy a new TV when the maker stops updating the
firmware because the 5 year old SOC they put in the TV can't run the new stuff.

As the OP said, if there is a better place for this to be raised (base android
forum or some ATV forum) please let me know.

Thank you

Users can already do this through Android system settings:

System Settings > Apps > System Apps > Google Cast Receiver > Disable

Agreed but for novice users its probably way more straight forward to go to
settings / device / googlecast since there is already a place holder there.
Ideally it would be even better to have a mode that locks down the TV in some
manner to keep random folks on the same wifi from being able to do casting or
add a remote etc etc. Thank you for replying and please let me know if there is
a better place to submit this higher level request (ie being able to lock down
the android TV install in a way other than having to use private WIFI.
