I have a leased car
Same problem here. Personal car, Model 3 Highland, iPhone 14 Pro.
Same issue. Cannot setup virtual key. iPhone 15, Model Y.
I have a leased car and get the same error message (in French) Thanks Tesla Model Y iPhone 14 Pro
I have a leased Model Y, and get the Same error message ... I'm in the UK
New update for Watchla but same result…
Hi everyone, with the roll out of the new API, Tesla has limited virtual key enrollment permissions to just owner accounts. Those that are not using owner accounts will need to ask the owner of the vehicle to add the virtual key for them.
Once the virtual key is on the vehicle any non owner can utilize the virtual key.
We've asked Tesla for more clarity on this, repeatedly and are waiting to hear back. Until then we will be adding this to FAQs.
The most common cases for this denial are those that are leasing from a 3rd party dealer, short-term rentals and company cars.
There can also be other reasons for denial, however Tesla will tell you directly why.
Same error. Watchla message on phone stated I had to login again to have access to new Tesla API. After logging in, I received message to setup the virtual key. After scanning the QR code, I receive the message on my iPhone Tesla app that it is unable to share data as I am not the owner. I lease, and I am listed on the registration. The Watchla app was working before I logged in again to Tesla via Watchla to access the new API. My Tesla software version is V11.1 2023.44.30.8 06f534d46010.

Thank you for the reply. Will it be possible to add support for the old API until this is fixed? Right now the app unfortunately has very limited functionality when the virtual key is not working/possible.

I called Tesla. In my case our company leased cars, and I am listed as a driver. While my iPhone can be added as a virtual key, the watch is somehow different. The instructions by the developer in this thread state the owner must add the virtual key, but there are no instructions on how that would be done. Tesla support did not know how that would be accomplished.
I am an owner and still can’t receive a virtual key. How can i fix it?

Same issue. Cannot setup virtual key. iPhone 15, Model Y.
In my case, car is registered in my wife's name for tax purpose. She doesn't use Apple Watch so app is not installed on her phone. How do I get her to do the virtual key?
Same issue. Very frustrating as app is now useless. Can’t you revert to old api or add option for old api until this is fixed?
Same issue in Holland (leased car)
Hi @marckraan44a thanks for reaching out. The information you provided is incorrect. A Virtual Key is not bound to any device or any type of device. It's a universal key that lives in your vehicle and is used to verify incoming signed commands.
So for example if you want to send a signed command with Watchla, your vehicle will need Watchla's Virtual Key to verify that the command came from Watchla. This has nothing to do with which type of device the command comes from.
In the future, I'd recommend directing your 3rd party software related questions to the Tesla Developer team as support might night be properly trained on this subject and/or a reliable source.
We're continuing to push Tesla for more clarity around Virtual Keys for leased vehicles from 3rd parties. In the meantime you'll want to ensure that you're setting up your Virtual Key from and Owner account and you have allowed Watchla access to Vehicle Commands at sign in. If you have not allowed Watchla access to Vehicle Commands at sign in you will need to do so to use your virtual key.
Would just like to inform that the newest app release from tesla resolves this issue. I now have a working watch app. A virtual key can be added by using the keycard.
I have a leasing tesla and can´t use it now because of fleet api
When trying to setup the virtual key an error message is provided by the Tesla app - translated into english it reads: “Cannot share car You do not have permission to share this car”
Steps to reproduce the issue:
Involved car, phone, apple watch: New Tesla 3 model, IPhone 14 Pro, Apple Watch Ultra 2
