Searching/Filtering Contacts with Milestone Keyboard and selecting the contact results in "null"

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Press the "add contact" button
2. Slide out the Hardware Keyboard and begin typing
3. Select a contact using the touchscreen

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I expect to see the choosen contact, instead I see the word "null"

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

v3.1.4

Please provide any additional information below.

I'm using a Motorola Milestone 2.1 update 1 rooted
