Not 1,2 but:
3. Simply 1 more terrain, also in center, much bigger, with hole pixels
(discard) where the current terrain is. Should use as few batches as possible
(4,9,16 ?). One texture would be bad, so probably just diffuse with blendmap.
Edititng it needs a new mode in editor (deform, smooth, noise etc).
Probably needs a geometry patch to connect vertices on edge with the normal
terrain. Could do it so that the edge is below but then would be a visible hole
from far, so better to patch it somehow.
