Suggestion: Smarter auto on. #4

Hello, the app in its current form is a bit limited. I have a simple suggestion which greatly increases its usability.

Auto on:

  1. Turn on Wifi every X minutes, configurable by the user.
  2. Wait for ~60 seconds
  3. If the phone did not successfully connect to any network, turn off Wifi.

I apologize, this isn't an issue. But the App name is misleading, and you didn't advertise it correctly. I didn't know it's capable of doing what I described above until I downloaded it.

Sorry, but how is the app name misleading and what did I advertise? Turning WiFi on every 10 mins or so for 60 seconds would probably drain more battery then just keeping it on the whole time

SafwatHalaby commented 10 years ago

This is actually a complement. The app is more capable than its description! :)

The description never mentions the fact that the app can turn on Wifi after some interval, and turn it back off if it failed to connect. You should better advertise it by modifying the description:

"You can also specify to automatically turn on WiFi again, if you turn on your device. "

This part should state the full capabilities, perhaps something like: "You can also specify to automatically turn on WiFi again, if you turn on your device. Also, the app can scan for networks every X hours, it would then connect to a WIFI network if it's found, or re-disable WIFI if no suitable network is found."

Yeah, well who reads app descriptions anyway? xD Once you open the app you'll see what it can and can't do ;)

SafwatHalaby commented 10 years ago

Fixed a critcal grammar issue with the previous comment.

SafwatHalaby commented 10 years ago

No, that's simply incorrect. People would never download your app if you don't tell them what it does.

You must tell them it's capable of turning on Wifi according to a specified interval. I personally didn't want to download it until trying all other options, I would have downloaded it immediately if that was specified.

C'mon, it's a great app, why not show off?

j4velin commented 10 years ago

Okay, I changed the English app description in the play store

SafwatHalaby commented 10 years ago

Good, you should do that in F-droid as well :) https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=wifi&fdid=de.j4velin.wifiAutoOff&fdpage=2

Also, you might want to update the title to be consistent with the Google Play title. (Wifi Automatic)

It's also a more descriptive title ;)

j4velin commented 10 years ago

Yeah, I just changed the title and icon yesterday, I guess F-Droid will automatically fetch the new data (someday)

SafwatHalaby commented 10 years ago

I suggest you also change the description as you did in Play Store.

P.s. I love your app.

I have my settings to turn wi-fi on every 15 mins is this not a good idea?

SafwatHalaby commented 9 years ago

There's no correct answer. It's a tradeoff. I personally find 30 minutes / 60 minutes fine. (With auto off if inactive for 2 minutes) Just make experiments. If it impacts your battery, make it higher.
