Perhaps Google maps is displaying the Sea of Japan as 日本海, but when the
UI is Korean, perhaps 동해 ()donghae) is more appropriate. There appears to
be a controversy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_of_Japan_naming_dispute

Google map uses Korean name if ccTLD is kr and Japan name if ccTLD is jp.
Otherwise, it shows both names at a certain zoom level and shows only Japanese
name (more internationally recognized name) at other zoom levels.
