Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. install darkice from distribution
2. set up config file in /etc
3. start darkice

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I really have no idea what is expected, other than some indication of success.
What I see is:  Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

DarkIce 1.0 on Debian 7
DarkIce 1.0 on Linux Mint
DarkIce 1.0 on Ubuntu

Please provide any additional information below.

I have downloaded source for 1.2 and compiled on both Debian and Linux Mint.  
It has the same basic issue, but the error message wording is a bit different.
