Give melee weapons a durability? #187

Closed jbzdarkid closed 8 years ago

I keep hearing complaints about melee weapons being "op", so how about this. Say 50 swings -- so not a huge effect on players who are playing well, and moving quickly; but penalizes players who are doing poorly and relying on melees for completely shutting down boomers / events. This doesn't strictly discourage meleeing tank, but might help the issue.

I vote yes if you promise to add unbreakable III and sharpness V.

So 200 swings and double damage?

MattNF commented 8 years ago

I don't really like this idea, I don't think promod should be introducing new mechanics outside the normal game.

If melees should be nerfed, I think the following two changes should be made: Reduce damage on Tank from 5% to 4%, and reduce the max common that can be killed from 5 to 3. And possibly remove machete.

But right now I don't think they should be nerfed too heavily unless we had some corresponding infected nerf/survivor buff. I think the balance is in a good place right now, or might be too hard for survivors slightly.

My idea to nerf melee

removing full levels (giving them chip level equivalent)

Full levels remove team elements, they are in-consistent across servers, tick-rates and pings. They can massively reward bad positioning.

Chip levels on the other hand are very consistent and require either pre-chip or another person on the team to help.

This will be more punishing for lone-heros, remove those instances where someone crowded by commons levels a charger that comes from behind them stopping themselves from being incapped / killed / etc. Generally makes the game more consistent.

The only other time I see melee be unbalanced is on tank and the ability to self clear commons. I think the reduction of melee through the map was a good fix for this.

As for its ability to one shot the other SI, that happens 99% of the time after a dead stop, the issue is the dead stop, if I dead stop you with anything out, ill kill you. I don't see this as a melee issue

Scrapped idea?

jbzdarkid commented 8 years ago

I'd still like to code it, but I was waiting to see if people liked the idea first. I got basically no legitimate responses.

I don't think it should be added on principle of not adding random new mechanics (unless really necessary, like health bonus)

I'd like to see it for l4d3 though lmao
