Create a more integrated chat feature, one that can last the next several iterations.

There should be a key for entering chat, such as the enter key.
There should be a key for leaving chat, such as the escape key.
Movement and attack keys should not work while in chat.
User names should appear in chat (not just 'guest').
Users' characters should appear in chat.

Spam filter! Block blank messages (containing nothing, or whitespace), etc.

If there is a local (as in only that screen's players can read) and a Global (all players can read) chat, that would be nice (and also help somewhat solve your chat issues). Players should be allowed to turn off either chat at will (tabs, or something similar) and switch chats if they wish.

Granted, that is a feature that might take a LONG while before we can see it.
