Update to be 13.10 compatible #18

In ejabberd 13.10 the String is already binary, calling list_to_binary throws badarg error

Thanks! The fix looks good, but could you update the commit message to more reflect what was changed? There are several commits that makes changes in order to work with 13.10, not only this one.

Merged the fix, with a rewritten commit subject. Skipped the Makefile changes. If anything, the build system should be using rebar.
