API doesn't work for FF 3.0.12/3.5

What I'd like is an open-source supported version of the user-extensions file, 
or
some alternative that works for the general community.  The modified 
user-extensions
file (from issue 38, as previously stated) works for us, but I can't assume it 
works
for everybody.  I do not want our group to diverge from the open source code 
unless
absolutely necessary.

I'd guess we need Fergal to look at all this and decide on the best approach.
