MP3s from server #291

Reported by karakal on 13 May 2006 06:26 UTC Some users have all their MP3s on a network server, attached to the clients either via share or a playlist server (like mt-daapd for iTunes) It would be very cool, if you start a server program, which handles scanning the files and delievering playlists to Januk Clients. But in difference to iTunes you should be able to create (local) playlists from remote MP3s. Perfect would be, if one can edit informations of the MP3s too.

It is planned for a long time (P2P device type) but not yet
implemented. It may implemented in the future but we have to
deal with legal issues too.

I wasn't thinking of anything P2P (because of the legal issues)
I think of a dedicated server process with login and
password. So that you can handle the ressource-intensive
tasks (scanning and rescanning of folders with mp3s) for
many clients on one server.
Very interesting would also be many clients playing in sync
one playlist...

Actually, what we call P2P should be renamed and is similar
from what you mean: a jajuk user (or server) has one or more
directory devices and others jajuk user can create a new
kind of device: remote device mapping this server or peer
(protected by password). Then, music itself is transfered
over http by streaming.
About several users sharing the same collection, we already
tought about it but had to give up: lock/sync of collection
would be too complex.
Playing a same playlist in sync is another feature and is
similar to a podcast server. We think about podcast clients
into jajuk but writing a podcast server too can be a good
idea ...
