Pychess Freezes a couple of seconds after start #664

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. install pychess (tried 0.10-beta1-3ubuntu1 & 0.10-rc1-1)
2. run pychess
3. it freezes after a few seconds before anything can be done in pychess

Brief background?
I did initially succeed in starting pychess a few times before this problem
arose. It initially happened after I removed some (entirely) unrelated packages:

gnome-orca
thunderbird
firefox-gnome-support
firefox
firefox-branding
ubufox
totem-mozilla
nano

As informed by 'grep remove /var/log/dpkg.log'

I tried restoring these packages, completely removing pychess and reinstalling,
changing the version to 0.10-rc1, reinstalling python, removing directories
'.pychess', '.local/share/pychess', '.config/pychess', '.cache/pychess' and
'.pychessconf', none of which
has made any difference.

So perhaps the changes made to my package lists were coincidental.

Does it happen every time?

Yes

What version of the product are you using?

0.10-rc1

Did you use an installed version of PyChess or did you run in from a
tarball/svn?

Deb package from http://sites.google.com/site/pychess/

Please provide any additional information below.

Just tested with subversion revision 1666.

Same results.

The output from a run of revision 1666 after removing/ensuring did not exist:

'.pychess', '.local/share/pychess', '.config/pychess', '.cache/pychess' and
'.pychessconf'

I'm a bit confused about what version are you running. Can you try the latest
release, please?

Ok, I've tried it with the version you linked. I also deleted the existing
pychess folders in my home directory before running.

.config/pychess .local/share/pychess .cache/pychess

Please see attached the only log produced and a screenshot of where it freezes.

Try disabling "Preferences > Assistive Technologies":

Well spotted, and thank you so much.

I'd accidentally enabled assistive technologies when opening orca to see if I
could uninstall it.

Failed to start one more time after disabling it, but started when I deleted
the pychess folders as I said above.

:)

This "Assistive Technologies" thing is so weird.
We should add it to a FAQ somewhere visible.
Or if we can detect it in the game, add a warning message.
Or even better, report it to the gnome devs :)
