The biggest function is to aid in mob farming. When it detects mobs, it send out a signal of course, with a list of mobs to choose from or the choice to choose item detection.
I also made a suggestion on the actual mod page, but I think the ideas would go better in your mod, due to the fact, the ideas don't completely follow the original mods theme.
