Using Charger when running at 333mhz issues #338

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
Note: These problems can generally be solved by having a battery inside and
limiting the XMB/Game speed at 222mhz.

1. Set XMB/Game speed as 333mhz.
2. Turn off PSP, take out battery, plug in charger.

3. Try turning on the PSP. Power switch glows green, memory stick flashes,
screen still blank, green light fades (off).
4. Conclusion: PSP will not turn on by charger alone (without battery) when it
was at 333mhz. Sometimes this occurs even if you set at 222mhz before hand. I
think it's because sometimes the PSP temporarily becomes 333mhz at bootup.

3. Start a game from XMB
4. Memory stick flashes, screen still blank, green light fades (off)
5. Conclusion: PSP will not start game by charger alone. This also occurs if
you set at 222mhz before hand. I think it's because the PSP temporarily becomes
333mhz when starting the game.

3. This time, leave the battery in, and start the game.
4. When the game has loaded, the PSP stops charging and maintains its charge
level. If you take out the battery it dies in about 10 seconds. For e.g, God
Eater Burst. PSP battery at 20%. Start the game at 333mhz with the battery in.
Load your game. Plug in charger. The power light alternates between orange and
green and maintains at 20%, whereas it should be charging. If you plug out the
battery, the PSP dies in say 10 sec. Sure this prevents charging and playing at
the same time which can be harmful to batteries but also screws people who want
to conserve battery by running off the charger only, who don't know all you
have to do is set the speed at 222mhz beforehand.
5. Conclusion: PSP will not charge nor run off the charger when at 333mhz in a
game.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I believe these will fix the problems:
Limit the bootup to 222mhz.
Limit the starting of game to 222mhz.
Limit the speed of game to 222mhz when running solely on charger.
What's to learn from this if the above cannot be done?
-Keep your battery safe. Without it, your PSP is gone and possibly won't boot
up unless you find another battery. Maybe you could jolt it back to life
(literally) but that's kinda dangerous...
-If you want to use the PSP with the charger only to preserve your battery
life, only take out your battery if you're on the XMB OR in a game that's
running at 222mhz.
Hope this helps people who run into the same issues.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
6.20 PROB10 Fix-1 on a 3000.

Please provide any additional information below.
I have tried turning off all plugins, isocache, memory stick speedup, disable
hide CFW files from game. They're not the cause, seems to be 333mhz's problem.
Yes my battery's genuine, I bought my PSP3000 default bundle from an official
Sony store whose's location is on my region's Sony site.
IF it is an isolated case (i.e you're unable to replicate), do tell, I might
buy another battery (if it still turns out NOT to be the battery after that hey
I could use it lol). But I ran my PSP through a PSP homebrew program and it
said my PSP battery is at 985/1200 mAH which means its still moderately healthy
and is probably not the culprit.

Works fine for me without the battery without changing anything. I have psp
3000 with 6.39 Pro B10

It seams to me that your using an USB charger or some kind of low efficiency
charger.
This kind of problems occur for me ONLY while i'm charging the PSP from a USB
split Data/Charger cable. The charger I have has 5V DC 1500mA output. Check
your charger and evethually buy yourself a more efficient one.

Thanks for the replies,

RE: Usb charging
I don't have a USB split data/charger cable.
->Would I get one to charge my PSP?
No, the charge is pathetic compared to a charger.
->Would I get one to use the PSP with the USB charger only
to preserve your battery life?
No, the USB mini B "dock" on the top of the PSP isn't secure.
A sudden jerk might cut the power.

On a related note, charging/running off the USB cable (plug in USB, take ot
battery) has the same problems as the charger e.g you can only take out the
battery if game is running at 222mhz.

RE: Charger
I have 2 chargers in possession:
One is 1500mAH which is original.
The other is 2000 mAH which is from when I had my 1000,
and may or may NOT be original.
Both give the issues I've stated in the report.
I don't know how to check the chargers:
Do I need a voltmeter or something?
I don't know of any plugins that display the voltage when running solely off
the charger (e.g PRXshot only displays battery voltage), do you happen to know
of any?
If it helps my battery voltage is 3.66v which is what is stated on the battery
thus it is healthy...

What does this mean?
Case 1: It's because there is weak charge coming out from the USB cable AND
both chargers. Your charger is faulty!
Result: I'll have to hunt really hard for a 3000 charger/order online since the
Sony stores are out of stock and the 2nd hand shops in my region don't carry
them. Sheesh, hope it's not the case. Anyone know of any plugins/homebrew which
display charge input and voltage input when using the charger only?
Case 2: It's a 333mhz problem
Result: I already know that I have to restrict to 222mhz, but would suck if
someone eles encounters the problems and doesn't know what to do. If it is a
bug, a fix would be ideal.

Again, thanks for the inputs..

It doesn't happen on me i did what you said = NO ISSUES AT ALL

I'm on 6.20 PRO-B10 PSP 2K

Just tried it again:
PSP 3004 03G with 6.20 PRO B-10.fix 1 with permanent patch.
Took out the battery.
Plugged my 5V 1500mA DC charger
Set the Game Clock to 333/166
Started Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
Everything was normal.

This is NOT a software issue.

If you want to test this try runing for example Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep
on ORIGINAL firmware (You can set the clock in game for 333/166) or any other
game you can run on original firmware with 333/166 game clock and test if
you'll have this problem too. If your PSP won't run on the charger only while
your runing original firmware with a game on 333/166 then it's a problem with
your charging efficiency - otherwise it MIGHT be an issue related to the CFW.

PS: A CHARGER doesent have an output of mAh ( mili ampere-hour )but in mA (mili
amphers) since Ah is a unit of electric charge, not electric curent. Please
obtain at least such minimal knowledge by at least reading wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ampere-hour.

You dont need a voltmetter. Every charger has a written specification on it.
Polish (I gues European as well) standard original charger is a 100-240V 0.2A
AC to 5V 1500mA DC converter.

5V*1500mA=7,5W
If your chargers output is 3,66V like the voltage of the batery you wrote and
1500mA then:
3.66V*1500mA=5,49W wich is 26,8% less efficient than the original charger I got
with my PSP.

I don't trust the written specification on the chargers
because I believe they may be fake,
hence why I asked if there's a way to "officially" test.

Anyways...
Based on the evidence presented, I conclude that my 3000 charger
(which I believe is genuine, it matches this pic EXACTLY
http://www.yobogroup.com/main/img/psp3-3391.jpg) is failing me. It's probably a
frayed wire or something that leads to a pathetic charge. Time to find a new
charger.

Thanks guys.
