I feel that the arrows would take a lot of vertical space on the popup. Wouldn't something like "Strand: +" be sufficient? I think using +/- is standard for strand direction. It may not be intuitive whether it is + or - with arrows.
Sure, use the + or - symbols.

OK, Strand: +/- added. It's under aliases and above annotation.
Here are icons for the strand direction of any given gene. This nulls my previous thought about making the popup vertical size dynamic.
While you're poking around with the annotation panel, can you adjust the spacing of the icons on the bottom row? Centered, and flush with both edges, as in pic:
